Winter prep for White Mountain cars

Everything that goes wrong in January was visible in October. An hour in the driveway now is a 5 a.m. jump you will not need.

$35/hr per hour plus parts · Prices are the floor. We set a fair number with you.

The check: battery load and charging output, coolant freeze point with a refractometer, belt and hose condition, washer fluid rated for cold, wiper blades, tire tread and pressure, cabin and engine air filters, and a look under the car for anything a summer of forest roads loosened.

We top fluids off from the truck at cost and replace what is marginal while we are there, with your okay on each item. The battery is the one we are strictest about: a battery that tests at 60 percent in October is a battery that does not start in January.

If you keep a cabin, book it for the week you close up. A car that sits a month in the cold needs a battery tender, a full tank, and tires a few pounds high.

When you call, have this

  • How the car is used: daily, cabin, or stored
  • Year, make, and model
  • Anything it did last winter you did not like

Questions people ask

What does winter prep cost?
About an hour at the hourly rate for the check, plus anything you choose to replace at our cost. Most cars are done in sixty to ninety minutes.
Do I need snow tires in Pinetop-Lakeside?
A good all-season with real tread handles most of the plowed roads. If you live up a side street that does not see a plow, or you drive 260 at night in a storm, dedicated winter tires are the difference. We will tell you which you have.
What is cold-soak?
A car parked outside overnight reaches the air temperature all the way through. At 10°F a battery delivers roughly half its rated amps while thickened oil demands more. Weak batteries fail at exactly this moment, which is why the test now matters.
